Orthodontics is a dentistry specialty that addresses the diagnosis, prevention, management, and correction of mal-positioned teeth and jaws, and misaligned bite patterns. It may also address the modification of facial growth, known as dentofacial orthopaedics. Abnormal alignment of the teeth and jaws is very common. Metal braces are the most traditional braces out there. They are the braces with the metal wire and brackets connecting to the teeth. Ceramic braces are just like the traditional metal braces, except these have a different look. There are various other types of braces like self ligating brackets which are a lot more comfortable to the patient which look a lot like the metal and ceramic braces. Braces are worn by all types of people. While teenage children wear most braces, they can be seen on younger children and also adults. In the past decade, adults who wear braces have increased, making it more normal to see older people straightening their teeth.
